Selection for robust rainbow trout, better resistant to changes in environmental conditions (hypoxia and temperature)

Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss: a species of cold water that is sensitive to changes in environmental conditions related to global climate change.

The overall objective of the Hypotemp project is to study genetic determinism and the selection possibilities of hypoxic and hyperthermic stress resistance in rainbow trout. This fish species is indeed sensitive to global climate change, which is likely to induce degradation of oxygen levels and temperature, both in absolute value and in amplitude of fluctuations around the average value.These degradation of thermal and oxygenation conditions, induced in particular by climate change, are at the origin of problems such as increased mortality, increased pathogenic pressures, decreased intake, and loss of growth. Technical solutions exist to manage these water quality parameters, however they are expensive and highly energy intensive.

The benefits for breeders :

Obtaining genetically selected fish on their robustness from hypoxic and hyperthermic challenges is thus an interesting alternative. These selected fish could be distributed to all fish farms, including those that do not have the technical means to control environmental variations. This would allow businesses to be less dependent on environmental conditions and more resilient to climate change.

The tasks of SYSAAF :

  • Coordinate fish farming by the three breeding companies
  • Realize thermal and hypoxic challenges on breeder populations
  • Participate in the estimation of genetic parameters of robustness traits and their correlations with production traits
  • Participate in dissemination of results
