Study of chelmerin in egg white and its role in embryonic development

As part of the PREVADI Region project, INRAE has produced recombinant chicken chelmerin and anti-chelam monoclonal antibodies. With these tools, we showed that this protein was expressed in the hen embryo (Mellouk et al., 2018). Based on these results, we have very recently observed the presence of chelmerin (protein and messenger RNA) in the egg gland and more precisely a very strong expression in the magnum and a little less in the infundibulum. These results have led to the study of the expression of chelmerin in the different compartments of the egg and more precisely in the white since the magnum is the part of the oviduct responsible for the formation of the white. By immunoblot and ELISA we have shown a high amount of chelmerin in the egg white and in the yolk membranes (membranes that surround the yellow and play a major role in fertility/fertilization) while it is very weakly expressed in the yellow. These results are consistent with recent proteomic literature data showing chelmerin (RARRES2) as strongly expressed in egg white (Bilkova et al., 2018).

The objective is :

  • Whether chelmerin is a marker of the quality of the chick’s embryonic development.

The benefits for breeders :

  • At the end of the project, the partners of the sector, would have a marker of quality of embryonic development. Chelmerin could become a breeding trait for poultry breeders.
